Yesterday I was invited along to an “An Evening With Matt Stirland – The Nutrition Man” who is now based at Luciderm Aesthetics in Stokesley. The evening was an opportunity to hear Matt talk about healthy eating, weight loss, lifestyle advice and how changing his own diet has literally changed his life.
Matt began the evening by introducing himself and gave us a back story to his nutrition journey…a fire fighter and makes no secret of his past mental health issues. Depression. At this point in his life he knew he wanted to make some changes and starting looking in to improving his mental health with food! He spent a lot of time researching the benefits of food (the good foods as well as learning about the bad foods). Fast forward 3 years and he’s fit and very well and is now focussed on helping others with their struggles with food…whether it is weight loss, health issues or even skin problems.
I am actually a client of Matt’s so I had met him previously before last night. A couple of years ago I contacted him to help me with my struggles with bad eating habits which had developed due to a stressful situation leading to weight gain which I just couldn’t conquer without support. The one thing that you will find when you meet Matt for the first time is his amazing calming and gentle nature. He is such a warm person and you immediately feel at ease. I personally had great results with the food plan that Matt gave me. Another success story is a lady called Sarah Dawson. The reason I am mentioned Sarah particularly is that is a personal training client of my husband Neil Rimmington – Personal Training. Neil had told me about Sarah’s weight loss success and it linked back to Matt and the fact that Sarah had been a client of Matt too. He was helping Sarah with a tailored eating programme to help her lose weight. Sarah has already had an amazing transformation…
Matt has actually written a blog of his own about Sarah’s success which you can read here.
During the event Matt talked all about different issues associated with food… everything from eating for your health, stress triggers, misleading marketing on food labelling (low fat foods containing lots of sugar for example), FATS good and bad, cholesterol and salt, fizzy drinks and he also showed examples of some foods that contained a high volume of sugar… some of which were actually shocking! There were a few gasps from the audience.
Matt is clearly passionate about this subject and is also working towards qualifying as a clinical counsellor in 2018 as he believes a lot of food issues are triggered from mental health/lifestyle problems that we all face in life. Matt hopes that offering counselling with be a perfect fit to working with clients on their food journeys.
